HCPCS L1833

Hinged Knee Brace

HCPCS L1833 is a prefabricated, off-the-shelf knee orthosis with adjustable knee joints and rigid support. The hinges guide the knee through a safe range of motion and keep it from buckling or twisting, so you can walk and climb stairs with more confidence. We fit the hinges at the center of your knee and make sure the brace stays in place when you walk.

Covered when ordered for

  • Path 1: a recent injury to the knee or a recent surgical procedure on the knee, or
  • Path 2: you are ambulatory (able to walk) and have knee instability

Doctor's note should include

  • An exam of the knee with an objective description of joint laxity, for example a varus/valgus stress test or an anterior/posterior drawer test, showing instability
  • Which knee (right, left or both) and the diagnosis
  • That you are ambulatory, and how the knee affects walking, stairs or daily activities
  • For Path 1, the date and type of the recent injury or surgery
  • Note: a statement that the knee 'feels unstable' or an X-ray report alone is not enough to show instability
