Do I need a prescription for a brace?

To bill insurance, yes. Your doctor can fax the prescription and a visit note or progress note to (844) 438-5893, or you can bring them to our store at 141-04 Rockaway Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11436.

What should my doctor's note and prescription say?

The note should include your diagnosis, symptoms, exam findings, how the condition limits daily activities and why the brace is medically necessary. Knee braces also need an exam showing knee instability, or a recent knee injury or surgery. For a car accident or work injury, the note should say the injury is related to the accident or the job. The prescription needs your name, the date, the brace (HCPCS code) and side, and your doctor's name, NPI and signature.

Does Medicare cover braces, AFOs and walking boots?

Medicare Part B may cover these braces when your doctor prescribes them and they are medically necessary. Back braces (L0650) follow LCD L33790, knee braces (L1833) follow LCD L33318, and AFOs (L1933, L1952) and walking boots (L4361) follow LCD L33686. L0650 needs prior authorization, and from October 28, 2026, L1833 and L3916 do too in New York. Star DME submits the prior authorization for you.

Does No-Fault insurance pay for a brace after a car accident?

Yes. New York No-Fault pays for medically necessary equipment after a car accident, no matter who caused it. With your doctor's prescription, we bill your auto insurance company directly. When the claim is accepted, you typically pay nothing out of pocket. File your No-Fault application with the insurer within 30 days of the accident.

Does workers' comp cover a brace in New York?

Yes. New York workers' compensation covers braces prescribed for a job-related injury. We bill the carrier under the NY Workers' Compensation Board DME fee schedule and request prior authorization when needed. Injured workers do not pay a copay or deductible on an accepted claim.

Does Medicare cover the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus CGM?

Medicare may cover a continuous glucose monitor like the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus if you have diabetes and use insulin, or have a history of problematic low blood sugar, and your doctor saw you within the last 6 months (Medicare LCD L33822). NY Medicaid and many commercial plans also cover CGMs. Star DME checks your coverage and supplies the sensors and reader.

What does HCPCS mean?

HCPCS codes are the billing codes insurance companies use for medical equipment. L0650 is a lumbar-sacral back brace, L1833 is a hinged knee brace, L3916 is a wrist hand orthosis, L1933 and L1952 are ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) and L4361 is a CAM walking boot.
